Heroin addiction is on the increase and the need for many more heroin rehab centres is undeniable. Funding for the creation of new public rehabilitation facilities as well as for the day-to-day running of existing ones is sadly lacking and it is fortunate that many medical aid societies now offer at least some degree of relief for those that seek private treatment.

Although there is still need for more, the country has some top quality centres that provide welcome support in the battle against addiction.

Krugersdorp Prison was the first to invite Readucate  to train some of their officers and literate prisoners to become Readucate Instructors, and these instructors became rehabilitated and in turn rehabilitated the illiterate inmates they were teaching.

Boksburg Prison then invited Readucate to run Prisoner Rehabilitation Programmes  there, and today Readucate operates in more than 20 prisons, changing the lives of prisoners.

Hardened criminals begin to realise that they can be useful and they have hope for the future.It is estimated that about  80% of released prisoners return to crime in South Africa. The good news is that Readucate Instructors are encouraged to start their own Readucate Centres which means they have an honest means of livelihood as well as the opportunity to give back something to their communities.
