HART (Helping Animals Recover from Trauma), an animal rehabilitation centre, established in 2004, is a sanctuary where  injured, abandoned, sick and traumatized wildlife recover until they can be released back into the wild. They also educate the public and provide courses about the consequences of poison and fishing tackle,  buying wildlife from locals, removal of birds eggs to name a few.

  • they rectify the damage man is causing wildlife and try to give all animals a second chance;
  • if the animal is an endangered species and can’t be released back into the wild, it is kept for breeding purposes.

Their wonderful work includes rescuing abandoned babies birds to the vet implanting a pin in a broken bone. They deal with a wide range of animals – owls, hawks,falcons, tortoise, snakes, aardwolf, hedgehog, bats, genets, chameleon, antelope etc.  The rehabilitation of wildlife means special housing, diets and care for each specific species.

Their centre is open 7 days a week and they welcome calls from the public asking for help. They operate under a Permit granted by the Free State Department of Nature Conservation, and are a self-funded registered non profit organization which exists solely on the generosity of the public and business sector.

Orphan monkey rehabilitation | Vervet Monkey Foundation | Tzaneen

Their rehabilitation centre is designed to handle orphaned vervet monkeys of all ages that become orphaned each year. The babies are easily assimilated into their programme, and they have  successfully rehabilitated hundreds of babies. Many of them are rehabilitated and raised within a natural environment and retained a high degree of their natural fear of humans.

Their programme takes about four to eight weeks. They do this by introducing a baby to a female in one of the resident troops living in natural environments at the centre.

Second Chance Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre | Nelspruit White River area

They are a non-profit organization, dedicated to the quality care, rehabilitation and release of orphaned, confiscated and injured wildlife like birds, reptiles and small mammal species.

Wildlife rehabilitation cente caters specially for injured or orphaned indigenous wildlife species. They often hand rear the animal and return it to its natural habitat as soon as possible. They therefore have a close relationship with the Nature Conservation Department to ensure that releases take place in carefully chosen areas including reserves and conservancies, but wherever possible, animals are returned to their original location.

The philosophy of Second Chance Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre is to rehabilitate animals as quickly and effectively as possible in order to reintroduce them to nature, where they belong.

Excessive contact with humans is therefore undesirable and restricted to caring for and teaching them the simple behavioural traits that will equip the animals to survive in the wild.

FreeMe Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre | Johannesburg North

Wildlife is in crisis everywhere as development consumes thousands of hectares where they would normally be roaming free.   FreeMe is a rehabilitation centre for indigenous wildlife. It was founded in 1997 by a group of trained rehabilitators who realised that there was not enough organised care for suburban indigenous wildlife. They -

  • rescue,  rehabilitate and release indigenous wildlife onto carefully chosen reserves and conservancies;
  • educate the public through the use of lectures, newsletters, advertising, support and advice.

Each year thousand of birds, mammals and reptiles become orphaned, sick or suffer injuries, and most veterinarians do not have facilities to cater for wildlife.The public can bring wildlife to FreeMe for specialised treatment, care and rehabilitation until they can be released.

The centre is open seven days a week from 8am to 5pm. FreeMe relies on members of the public to bring compromised animals to the centre, and for notification if there are wild animals in distress. In emergencies such as oil-spills volunteers may travel to a locality to rescue and assist wildlife.

FreeMe is run by a full-time manager and a dedicated group of volunteers. With the help of local veterinarians they provide specialised treatment, care and rehabilitation; the ultimate aim being to release wildlife back into its natural habitat.
