Alcohol And Substance Abuse: The Effects On Others
If you are an addict you probably have an intense understanding of the horrible effects alcohol and substance abuse can have on your life. You need to consider the effect your addictions and destructive behaviours have on those closest to you.
Alcohol and substance abuse has been found to be the number one contributor towards alcohol and substance abuse. Alcoholics regularly become physically violent and emotionally abusive with their wives and children. Other agonising behaviours include sexual violence in the form of molestation (usually of children) and rape. The “tripped out” highs that drug addicts go on often lead to violent and aggressive behaviour, even towards loved ones, and in excessive or habitual usage the compromised judgement of the addict can change so drastically as to move them to murder.
Violence is not the only negative effect that alcohol and substance abuse has on the lives touched by an addict. The high cost of satisfying and maintaining an addictive and dependent habit brings about great financial woes too. Families of substance abusers often lack basic necessities such as food and adequate clothing, not because of lack of income, but because it is wasted away on alcohol and drugs. This being said, there are situations that commonly arise where the destruction of the addict’s live reaches the point where they are unable to function as a productive member of society, lose their employment and income, and suffer financially in this way. This suffering from lack of income is then naturally passed on to the alcoholic or drug addict’s family.
If only this was where the list ended! Terrible as it is already, the list of detrimental impacts upon the lives other than the addict’s is long and heartbreaking. If you are an addict, you must realise and remember that your alcohol and substance abuse is hurting those around you, those whom you love and care about. The Drug Educational Council Ministries, founded in Noupoort, is a registered secondary care facility offering substance abuse rehabilitation services.
The substance abuse rehabilitation program is structured as follows:
Phase 1 Orientation
- Introduction of program objectives.
- General group sessions.
Phase 2 – 4 weeks
- Designation to work station, inclusive of mechanical workshop, farm, building maintenance, woodwork,
DEC office, landscaping, computer development, catering (internal purpose) and youth development
projects.
- Topic group sessions and counseling course (Level 1).
Phase 3
- Marketing of the resident’s skills into the community.
- Topic group sessions and counseling course (Level 2).
- Family sessions.
- Outreach missions.
- Periodic visits home, pending family agreement

People take drugs for a variety of reasons – curiosity, peer pressure, entertainment, boredom. People want to experience that first pleasurable high over and over again. However that first pleasure is soon lost and replaced with anger, depression and anxiety. Where can you turn?
The Noupoort Christian Care Centre provides substance abusers with education help in overcoming their addictions. They teach and develop life skills, discipline and routine by involving the recovering addicts in a housing routine and everyday situations.
The Farm is the first project after orientation that the male residents are part of, while the female residents are involved in the kitchen. Doing physical work and working in an outdoor environment is vital in the recovery of addicts.
It is their responsibility to ensure that all the animals on the farm are fed and well cared for and to work in the vegetable gardens. The farm serves two purposes: One being to support the centre with what is necessary to feed the residents and the staff, the second being for spiritual upliftment of the residents, giving them time to see God in nature.

They are a non-profit organization, with their focus being on helping people engulfed in the grip of alcohol and drug problems to find a road of recovery and ultimately to improve the well being of individuals, families and communities.
They offer a range of informational, educational and support services through their evidence based programmes and dedicated service delivery. Their programs are international approved and tailored to suit the specific needs of the individual.
