QuadPara Association of South Africa was established in 1978. One of QASA’s main areas of focus is that of developing the skills and the employment potential of people with disabilities. QASA has a number of initiatives to tackle these barriers and provide opportunities for people with disabilities to gain skills and qualifications.
Not having transport is a huge barrier for people with disabilities who want to lead an independent life, and QASA started a pilot project in KwaZulu-Natal to teach people with mobility impairments to drive a vehicle fitted with hand controls.
The Association doesn’t only benefit quadriplegics, but also paraplegics. Their focus is on serving quadriplegics, paraplegics and the disability sector in general in whatever capacity their members find most constructive. They help people with mobility impairments to lead independent lives with a decent standard of living, in areas ranging from personal care to adequate skills development and employment.

Starting out in 2000, BethaRapha is a registered non-profit organisation and ministry dedicated to helping people break with addictions like drugs and alcohol. Their help is offered free of charge to anyone irrespective of race or religion, who wants to break free from their addiction.
They have as their mission statement:’To shatter the drug and alcohol culture and enable addicts to walk free.’
They have got a passion for people who are engulfed in the world of addictions, and they want to guide them into taking responsibility for their lives; rid themselves of their addictions and to go forward into a new life drug free. They also focus on the redevelopment of social and interpersonal skills.

Freedom Recovery Centre focuses on giving support to the parents and families suffering the pain and devastating consequences of drug- and alcohol abuse in South Africa.
They don’t only want to save the person from addiction, they would like to educate them and prepare them for a re-entry into ordinary life.
Freedom Recovery Centre is also committed to drug prevention campaigns on a regular basis regarding the consequences of drug- and alcohol abuse.

The fact that a rehabilitation centre located in Randfontein has incorporated food gardening into its unique approach to rehabilitating its patients for drug and alcohol abuse shows how the simple and natural things of life can play a part in the ravaged lives of people.
Established in 1999, The Carroll Shaw Christian Rehabilitation Centre uses a broad-based psychological and religious programme to assist patients referred to the centre by churches, other addiction centers, organizations and community members with their rehabilitation.
After the patients are rehabiltated, they are sent back to their communities with renewed vision, attitudes and skills – making use of their newly acquired food gardening expertise.
Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) began conducting a series of comprehensive practical workshops disseminating diverse Permaculture skills ranging from soil and water management to health and nutrition.
The Carroll Shaw Permaculture Project is a very worthwhile project because it educates people, it empowers them and gives them a living. The Permaculture project at Carroll Shaw Christian Rehabilitation Centre was launched in 2008.
