Teenage depression can manifest in many ways and as a parent it is important for you to be aware of and look out for the symptoms. The most telling symptom is a change in grades at school from very high to very low in a short period of time. Another symptom to look out for in teenage depression is lethargy and a difficulty in getting out of bed in the morning. It is important to realise that these symptoms must be quite extreme and that simple teenage moodiness cannot be considered depression.

Depression is a medically diagnosed condition that can be treated successfully by a combination of therapy and drugs. There are many types of depression and depending on the type and severity of the depression, drugs may or may not be needed. If drugs are however prescribed as part of your treatment it is important to note that it can take months or even years to get the right combination to treat the depression. It is important to stick with the drugs you are given and report any symptoms or side effects that you may experience to your therapist or medical practitioner. Never give up and remember that depression help is available and that you can live a normal happy life.
